Job Description: 

VACI Galleries at Chautauqua Institution currently seek one intern for the summer. Intern will:

  • Learn how to properly and professionally handle, install, and light artwork for major international exhibitions.
  • Learn how to properly uninstall and pack artwork for safe shipment via certified art handlers.
  • Ability to prepare a gallery space for exhibitions, including patching, sanding and painting walls.
  • Work with professional artists, learn about their work, including processes, styles, techniques and mediums.
  • Learn how to interact with gallery visitors and discuss exhibited artwork.
  • Learn how to perform daily tasks associated with major galleries such as creating detailed spreadsheets of exhibiting artists and their artwork, keeping a visitor log and performing sales transactions.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Ability to use a tape measure, hammer, and screwgun
  • Ability to deal with public in a professional manner
  • Installation/deinstallation of gallery exhibitions
  • Setup/attend/tear down artist opening receptions for each exhibition
  • Answer phones and perform sales transactions
Hours per Week: 
36-40 hours/week
Days/Hours Intern is Needed: 

9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday
