Period of Internship
Hours per week: 3 to 9
Students selected from both the Jamestown and Olean campuses will assist the sustainability coordinator in indentifying and quantifying opportunities for electrical energy reduction.
These activities will some or all of the following:
- Conducting an inventory of appliances campus-wide such as vending machines, printers, copiers, coolers, and electrical devices, then recording both the total number of units and the totals by type and model.
- Using a power meter to determine energy consumption, measuring energy consumed by each model over a fixed period then calculate annual kWh consumption and energy costs.
- Conducting an inventory of campus lighting recording quantity, lighting type, and power rating. Assist sustainability coordinator with research into more efficient alternatives and make recommendations quantifying both cost (increase or decrease) and energy savings.
- In conjunction with the IT department, create a proposal for the use of computer software to control shutdown and power-up of computers when not in use.
- Conduct an inventory of lighting devices by building to determine annual energy consumption. Suggest possible replacements with high-efficiency devices by comparing costs, energy reduction, and payback period.
- Accompany the sustainability coordinator on field trips to remote campuses to complete vending machine inventory.
- To complete the internship students will be required to create a report summarizing their efforts listing tangible actions and the resulting savings from those actions in both dollars and energy. They will also be required to describe their learning experiences while working on the inventory and energy reduction activities.
Students will be responsible for:
- Participation in learning activities such as reading assignments, videos, or group discussions to gain a better understanding of the principles of sustainable living.
- Assisting in the collection of data from various sources.
- Learning the basic principles of energy use and measurement.
- Keeping a thorough and accurate record of data sources and collection times.
- Participation in the computation of data into generalized information.
- Assisting in analyzing findings, determining recommendations for improvement and writing a report to that effect.
- Maintaining a professional attitude and demeanor toward both the project and those they come in contact with for the duration of the internship.
- Maintaining regular communication with the sustainability coordinator in order to schedule activities and maximize time available.
- Keeping a record of project hours for approval by site supervisor.
- Students will understand the local links to the global issue of greenhouse gas emissions by analyzing the campus links to greenhouse gas emissions.
- Students will gain a better understanding of energy use and conservation in a campus environment.
- Students will collect and analyze data, and report findings to the campus community, including campus decision-makers.
- Initial training on the basics of energy use and calculation
- Training on the use of various power meters
- Training on the installation and use of vending control units to reduce energy use
- Additional training will be conducted individually and as necessary
