I have been at JCC since 1976, and I have wanted to be a math teacher since at least the 10th grade. This has been an exceptional place to spend a career. In addition to being a faculty member, I have served as division chair and assistant dean of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics division (1998-2005). I have received the Faculty Award for Excellence (1985), the JCC Alumni in Education Award (2005), and the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching (2012).
I am also a member of the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (NYSMATYC). I coordinated state-wide mathematics competitions from 1983 to 1986, and served as secretary and a member of the executive board from 1986 to 1991. I also served a three-year term as president (president-elect, president, and past-president, 1991-1994). Furthermore, I have made several presentations at regional and annual NYSMATYC conferences, most recently in April of 2011.
For community involvement, I am a member and volunteer at the Jamestown Audubon Center and Sanctuary (2004-present). I lead nature walks for elementary school children and groups of all ages. I also frequently volunteer for the Snowflake Festival and Art-In-The-Park, and present a slide show on the American Bald Eagle for community groups both on and off the Audubon site.
I am also the creator and sponsor of the annual (since 1992) chocolate chip cookie fund-raiser for Roswell Park Pediatric Cancer Research. I am a member of the Board of Directors of the Jamestown Skeet Club (2002-present), and of the Lucille M. Wright Air Museum (June 2007-present). Each December, I assume the role of Santa Claus and visit elementary school classrooms. Each Christmas, I also help organize efforts in our local community to gather toys, warm clothes, and food for needy families. "Santa" and his elves make in-person deliveries to four or five homes each year.
