Next steps for accepted students

Congratulations on your acceptance to Jamestown Community College! Now that you’ve been accepted to JCC, you probably have questions as to what comes next. This checklist will help to explain the next steps in the process and keep you on course toward registration for the upcoming semester.

If you have been accepted early, registration may feel like it's taking its time. Meanwhile, watch your e-mail for occasional updates, newsletters, and other information from the Admissions office.

1. D2D placement testing

You must complete placement testing in reading, writing, and math before registering for classes unless you qualify for an exemption. Placement testing is administered through the Counseling and Career Center.

2. D2D financial aid

File for financial aid as early as possible. Be sure to list JCC’s federal school code of 002869 and TAP school code 2085 in your online application.

3. D2D advisement preparation session (APS)

An advisement preparation session (APS) provides you with the tools you need to prepare for your advisement and registration. We will go over your placement test scores, your program requirements, advisement-related terminology, and your responsibilities in the advisement process. After completing an APS, you will be able to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor to register for classes.

  • Full-time students starting in fall: you will receive your APS invitation in May.

Types of APS

  • Traditional Prep Session: You can attend a traditional prep session on campus. You'll meet with an advisor on another day. You must complete your placement testing before attending a traditional prep session.
  • SOAR Day: You will attend New Student Orientation, complete the APS, and schedule courses all in one day. You can also take a placement test. SOAR days occur in summer only. Space is limited at our SOAR Days, so register early!
  • Online APS: An online session will take approximately 35-40 minutes to complete. You'll meet with an advisor on another day. You must complete your placement testing before completing an online session.

You must complete all three parts of the JCC placement test (mathematics, reading, and writing) before completing an APS. The only exception is if you choose to take your placement testing during a SOAR Day.

4. D2D advisement and registration

After you complete the APS, you will be scheduled to meet with an advisor in your academic area and register for courses. If you are undecided, you will meet with a counselor who can help you to clarify your educational and career goals.

Full-time students must meet with an advisor before registering for courses each semester.

The most current registration dates, forms, and information can be found per semester with the credit course schedules.

5. D2D certificate of residence

If you are a New York state resident, you must submit a valid certificate of residence every academic year in order to receive the in-state tuition rate.  Certificates are accepted by the business office in person or by mail.

6. D2D financial responsibility agreement

Registering for classes creates a financial obligation with the college. The financial responsibility agreement (FRA) explains your financial liability with the college. In order to confirm your registration, you are required to complete and submit the FRA each semester by logging into Self-Service Banner and viewing your student bill.

7. D2D immunization records

Turn in your immunization records to the health center as soon as possible to avoid a $25 fine.

8. D2D housing

Housing is available at both JCC’s Jamestown Campus and the SUNY Fredonia campus. Please note that your academic major may determine at which campus you stay.

9. D2D additional considerations
  • Accessibility Services - Call 716.338.1251 for assistance with accommodations.
  • Textbooks - Textbooks are required for most classes and are not covered in the tuition.
  • Transportation - Make sure you have reliable transportation for the semester and a back-up plan if you are depending on others for rides to class. Transportation to and from JCC's North County Center will be available to students living at SUNY Fredonia.
  • Paperless billing - Check your student bill in Banner. JCC supports a paperless, greener environment by not mailing paper billing statements.
