Jamestown Campus

Dennis Collins has been an adjunct at Jamestown Community College for 28 years. He began teaching at the North County Center in Dunkirk while he was an elementary teacher in the Dunkirk Public Schools. Collins taught children’s literature, where he used his experience as a professional storyteller to enliven his classes. After retiring from the public schools, he taught reading in the English department on the Jamestown Campus while acquiring a second master's degree in history.

I teach a variety of psychology courses at Jamestown Community College. I also act as the College Connections psychology liaison. My favorite aspect of my job is watching my students grow intellectually and as critical thinkers throughout the courses I teach by challenging them to challenge themselves to think outside of their box. I am also the Anime Club co-advisor. To all of my current and future students: You need to read more. Read anything. Trust me. You could always read more. Don’t know what to read? Ask a librarian. It is their job. Librarians scare you? Weird.

I teach world history and world regional geography for the Social Sciences department, as well as Introduction to Global Studies and Inquire courses. Prior to finishing graduate school and teaching at JCC, I was a tutor and advocate for students at risk for a number of years. That experience taught me that with dedication and the support of faculty and staff, students can overcome whatever challenges life throws their way.

I have been teaching American history for over 30 years, with a majority of that time as a U.S. history and government teacher at Randolph Central School. I have been an adjunct instructor for Jamestown Community College since 2002. My passion is to use history as a vehicle for students to engage in upper level thinking skills. My classes do not ask you to memorize dates - they ask you why those dates are important. What information can we glean from that moment that will help us in today's world? In my courses, I concentrate on historical facts and how they relate to the present.
