Why Study Communication?

Whether in personal relationships or in the workplace, your ability to communicate effectively through speech, writing or electronic media is of utmost importance throughout your life. JCC’s communication degree program enables you to become an effective communicator and prepares you for employment opportunities in the broad field of communication.

The communication program at JCC emphasizes the human interaction side of the field of communication, with study in intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, organizational, public, mass media, and intercultural communication courses. Although the emphasis is on human communication, JCC’s communication program also offers students the opportunity to take elective courses in digital video production, broadcasting, and media storytelling.

As a communication student, you will take introductory and advanced communication courses starting with an introductory course in communication, a basic public speaking class, a class that introduces you the fundamental codes of mediated communication, and a mass communication and media literacy course. Your choice of advanced courses is determined by the direction you ultimately wish to pursue. The courses are selected after careful consultation with your academic advisor.

Graduates of JCC’s communication program are well prepared to transfer to four-year colleges and universities to pursue further study in the field of communication, or to find entry level employment in the field. Communication is a broad field with employment opportunities in schools, hospitals, industry, education and business. Career titles are expansive: community outreach specialists, public relations specialists, broadcast journalists, producers, communication specialists, human resources personnel, and staff trainers and mediators, to name just a few.

JCC also offers study in the applied side of the field of communication through its digital graphic design and publishing, media arts, and multimedia production programs.
