Students will obtain the basic reading skills needed to begin working toward their educational objectives. Topics include word recognition skill work, vocabulary development, and the mastery of basic comprehension patterns in reading. Grading is credit/fail. Students will develop skills in critical reading, rhetorical analysis, and argument. Students will read rhetorically and critically, and will analyze a variety of texts on current, inter-disciplinary topics. The course focuses on writing for specific audiences and purposes with an emphasis on academic composing. As such, students will develop skills that prepare them for academic and professional writing as they practice recursive writing processes and learn to enter conversations through informed and effective academic expression. Prerequisite: admission by successful completion of ENG 0430 or placement score: Accuplacer Writeplacer 4-6; Accuplacer reading 70+. Students will explore multicultural literatures (novels, short stories, poems, and plays) that speak to issues of identity with regard to race, class, gender, sexual identity, ability, language, and so on. In doing this, students will further develop research skills while being introduced to critical reading approaches such as feminist, reader response, postmodern, and psychoanalytic criticism. This "Writing in the Discipline" course serves as both an introduction to literature as well as an opportunity to refine reading and writing skills developed in this composition sequence.
