SBDC at JCC Success Story: International Ordnance Technologies

Tammy Snyder headshotTammy Snyder is the president of International Ordnance Technologies (IOT), which is a manufacturer of machine gun links (ammunition-loading devices for weapon systems). IOT had been a client of the Small Business Development Center for a number of years.  With the help of SBDC director Irene Dobies, Tammy obtained her Women Business Enterprise status in 2012. This designation allowed Tammy to continue to work with several of her existing customers who needed WBE participation and to begin to search for new buyers.

IOT had a single page website, which contained no company information or product description. Tammy stated that the site served no purpose other than she felt compelled to have some type of web presence. She was contacted by an SBDC advisor, Curt Anderson, to update her company website and pursue e-commerce.

In January 2013, Tammy selected a local web designer, Eric Martin of the Martin Group, to build a new, sales oriented website. Tammy, Eric, and Curt met twice a month to keep the project on schedule. Tammy had a clear vision of what she wanted the site to look like, and the designer did an incredible job bringing her vision to life.

The website was launched in June 2013 and looked, by customer accounts, “absolutely amazing.” Her customers consistently say that her website has the “WOW factor.” The new IOT website has created profit opportunities and provided a strong ROI. Tammy immediately started to receive international inquiries from new customers. The company landed a $40,000 order in September 2013 from a new client, which fully paid for the website. She is bidding on new contracts almost daily, which include a $400,000 order from a new customer in Spain and an order of six million ammunition links from a company in Michigan. These figures translate to over one million dollars in new revenue.

These new sales have the potential to dramatically impact revenue, profits, and jobs at IOT. Tammy currently has 30 employees. The new orders not only guarantee full employment for current employees, but also will create job opportunities for additional area residents. Tammy is planning on hiring six to eight employees in 2014 and promises that more will be added as business nationally and internationally grows.
