High school students

The College/High School Connections program at Jamestown Community College offers area high school students the opportunity to take college courses taught by approved high school teachers, who are also JCC adjunct faculty members, at their local high schools.

Over 1000 high school students at 33 schools in the JCC service area took advantage of college-level courses during the 2004-2005 school year. This brochure attempts to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the program.

Questions and Answers

Q.        What courses have been offered for JCC credit?

A.        Normally, JCC will consider approving courses where the high school curriculum already closely matches established JCC courses and where the instructor has the academic credentials and experience to teach the course. Q.        Who is eligible to take JCC courses in the high schools?

A.        Typically, juniors and seniors who are motivated and prepared to do college-level work are eligible to take these courses. All students must successfully complete necessary JCC placement tests and meet the same pre and corequisites as any other JCC student. Since the courses are taught at the college level, students must be prepared to do more work than in a typical high school course.

Q.        Who teaches these courses?

A.        Courses are taught by high school teachers who have met the same requirements as all adjunct faculty at JCC (i.e., they possess appropriate credentials in the field, agree to use the same textbooks and classroom materials and offer the same course as offered on campus, and be approved by discipline faculty at the college).

Q.        Where are the courses offered?

A.        Courses are offered at local high schools during the regular school day. Some courses are offered via distance learning to one or more “remote” locations.

Q.        What is the cost?

A.        JCC charges a reduced tuition for these courses, and the high schools bill the college for the same amount. Therefore, there is no cost to the New York state student, Pennsylvania students pay $44 per credit hour. A few high schools have students pay for required textbooks.

Q.        How much college credit can be earned?

A.        Most courses are for three or four college credits. It may be possible for students to earn 15 or more credits while still in high school. Grades are recorded in the registrar’s office at JCC, and transcripts can be sent from there to any other college.

Transferring…

Q.        What grade is necessary for the course to transfer?

A.        Most colleges will accept a grade of C or higher. Selective colleges may require a B. Students are strongly urged to contact prospective colleges to make sure courses taken will be transferred with full credit.

Q.        Do all colleges accept credits for JCC courses in the high school?

A.        Not all colleges do.  We surveyed the high schools offering JCC courses and found a very high level of acceptance throughout the State University of New York and at other New York colleges. However, some colleges do not accept college courses taken in high school. Students should check with prospective colleges regarding the transfer of these credits.

Q.        How do I let colleges know about JCC credits?

A.        All final grades are sent to the JCC registrar and entered on a JCC transcript.  Simply ask the registrar to forward your transcript to your college by completing a transcript request form.
