JCC Offers New Degree, Certificate in Welding
The New York State Department of Education and the State University of New York have approved degree and certificate programs in welding technology for Jamestown Community College’s Jamestown Campus.
JCC now offers a 63-credit Associate in Applied Science degree and a 32-credit certificate program in welding, with much of the instruction conducted at JCC’s Manufacturing Technology Institute. JCC’s facilities feature a fully equipped machine shop, specialized welding equipment, and physics and materials testing labs.
“These programs will help to meet an ongoing need in the western New York region by providing area manufacturers with highly skilled individuals to enhance their workforce,” notes Jean Schrader, assistant dean of JCC’s science, mathematics, engineering, and technology division. “The Occupational Employment Statistics Survey (2002-2012) compiled by the New York State Department of Labor reports estimated job openings for 60 welders in the western New York region each year. With the recent approval of the welding technology degree and certificate programs, JCC is ready to educate and train individuals to meet that need.”
The programs are for students desiring employment in the field of welding and welding technology engineering. Graduates will have the opportunity to pursue careers such as welding technician, welding supervisor, inspector, and sales engineer, qualifying for technician level positions involved in testing and improving welding processes, procedures, and equipment. Graduates of the welding technology degree program also have the option of transferring to four-year institutions offering the bachelor’s degree in welding engineering technology.
Welding technology is an integral part of many construction type activities both in the manufacturing sector and civil construction field. The field depends on a blend of knowledge, combining the chemistry of materials, an understanding of physics, and good hand and eye coordination. Students in JCC’s program will master welding skills by working on the same start-of-the-art equipment found in industry.
