The Jamestown Community College Honors Program Provides a challenging curriculum and enrichment opportunities for highly motivated students who have demonstrated their academic ability. Honors students work in a community of scholars, engaging in academic discussion and projects that require a high level of participation as well as independent investigation. Eligible students will choose from:
- Special courses which focus on an interdisciplinary approach to a particular topic
- Targeted sections of standard courses with increased academic challenge and more in-depth discussion and interaction.
- Mixed section courses which include students taking the courses at a regular level as well as a cohort taking the course at an honors level.
Program components:
- Honors program students are invited to participate in unique events within the college and larger community.
- Participants are invited to the four-part satellite honors series offered annually by PTK and given the opportunity to join a faculty member in leading the discussion at one of the programs.
- Program participants are required to attend at least one of the four sessions each year.
Participants are permitted to register for the subsequent semester one day prior to the opening of general registration, helping to insure their first selection of courses.
- Participants receive extended library privileges.
- Students who complete the program will be recognized at an annual banquet/reception.
- Students who complete the program by satisfying all academic and participation requirements receive an honors citation which appears on their academic transcripts. In addition, these students are distinguished at commencement.
Eligibility:
Students entering JCC for the first time must have a high school grade point average of 85% or better. Current JCC students or returning students with previous JCC credits become eligible for program participation by earning a grade point average of 3.5 or better in 12 or more semester hours of study. To continue in the program, all students must earn cumulative grade point averages of 3.0 or better. Those students who maintain and graduate with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and complete 10-12 hours of honors level work with a minimum of one hour earned though a field experience will receive an honors designation on their transcripts.
