Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. A wide body of research has shown that participants in MBSR classes have had clinically significant reductions in medical and psychological symptoms including chronic pain as well as increases in their ability to access inner strengths and resources. Students have the opportunity to learn and practice formal mindfulness skills including sitting meditation, body scanning and  mindful movement. Participants will be provided with CD’s or downloads of guided meditation and yoga practices for daily home practice. Movement and yoga practices are gentle and chair modifications will be offered. Participants do not have to have prior experience and will have an opportunity to develop skills that can improve concentration and the ability to manage emotions. Please bring a yoga mat, meditation cushion, and a water bottle to class with you.

Cold & Flu Care with WNY Plants

Cold and flu season is upon us. Luckily, Western NY lawns, creeks and gardens offer an abundance of local plants that can help. Studies and tradition have shown that herbs like elderberry, echinacea, boneset, thyme and more can help with cold and flu prevention, and/or reduce the severity and duration of sickness. Learn to identify or cultivate these plants, and how to safely and effectively use them for a healthy winter season. Samples and recipes will be offered, and each participant will take a bag of dried elderberries for preparing their own tea or elderberry syrup at home.

Herb Infused Gifts for the Holidays

Healing herbs make outstanding and easy holiday gifts! Now is the time to start preparing herb-infused vinegars, honeys, salts and syrups. In this class, Community Herbalist Sarah Sorci will guide you through the preparation of simple and delicious recipes. Learn which tasty herbs to choose for your intended purpose (digestion support, mood-lifting, memory boosting, etc.) and sample some of Sarah's favorite concoctions. Each participant will take home a bag of dried herbs for preparing a gift at home.

Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses, builds

understanding of their impact, and overviews common supports. The program also teaches the common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illnesses, like anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia. Mental Health First Aid is included on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).
