All About "U" Series
Spring is in the air and what better way to celebrate than joining us for an evening of painting wine glasses while you sip wine. Participants will paint and take home two completed glasses. All supplies will be provided. The cost of the class includes one glass of wine. Participants must be 21 and older.
Do you want to become a beekeeper? If you've thought about it but just aren't sure what it takes, attend this informational session. Participants will get basic information to make an educated decision on whether they want to keep bees and have hives. Topics include: costs of setting up in beekeeping as well as recommendations for first steps. Participants will receive resources on beekeeping and information on the local beekeepers association. This class is full of sweet rewards! Participants are asked to bring a notebook and pen or pencil to class.
This hands-on class covers the first five movements of Tibetan meditation, including the way energy moves through the body to create a harmony of meditation. The sixth movement is designed to bring quiet energy to acknowledge the peacefulness that you've created from within your body. The benefits of this form of meditation include: better quality of sleep, stops mind chatter, increases circulation, decreases tension, and results in total relaxation. The movements are simple to learn. Please wear loose fitting clothing.
Everyone can have a green thumb! Learn how to improve your soil, gardening skills, and plants as well as preserve your harvest. Additionally, participants will make and take home an herb infused vinegar. Participants are asked to bring the following to class: a notebook and something to write with; all other materials will be provided.
Art, Adventure, Social and History
Any individual age 18 or older, regardless of skill, is welcome to learn how to sail in a positive environment consisting of social interaction and fun. Upon completion of the course, participants will possess a foundational understanding, confidence and skills to sail. The class entails a total of 32 hours of instruction, which includes a combination of classroom and on-the-water instruction. Also included are a U.S. Sailing textbook, availability of appropriate sailing gear and use of CLCSF’s sailboats, which are 420s. *This class is held at JCC, CARN 123 from Apr. 17-May 8 each Tuesday (classroom training), and at Chautauqua Lake Community Sailing Foundation, 2 West Lake St., Lakewood, NY 14750 from May 16-June 21 each Tuesday and Thursday (on the water training).
Have you always wanted to study Swedish culture and customs, and how to speak Swedish? Take this class where you'll combine exploring Swedish culture with learning the basics of this language giving you the recipe for a great class! This is an intro Swedish language course that will incorporate many aspects of Sweden such as its history, culture, customs, and contemporary society.
Health & Well Being
Based on the book Becoming a Supple Leopard by Kelly Starrett, explore special stretching and rolling techniques for resolving pain and loss of function. Participants will mobilize and stretch most areas of the body. This course is designed for those who have chronic pain or unresolved injuries as well as individuals looking to improve performance in sports or hobbies. Please bring a yoga mat or towel, a 6" diameter high density foam roll, and a tennis ball to class.
Based on the book Becoming a Supple Leopard by Kelly Starrett, test your ability to squat, discover individual limitations, and apply the stretch or exercise necessary to free your body from restrictions. By the end of class, gain the tools to improve your ability to fully squat and the benefits that come from being able to do so which include ease of standing and sitting as well as improved sports performance. Please dress in comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or towel to class. Individuals are not required to take Part I in order to take Part II, but it is encouraged.
Participants will learn a series of simple movements designed to relieve knee pain and restore flexibility, movement and health to your knees. You will have an opportunity to release pain and tension from your knees and improve your ability to walk and move. Learn a short, five-minute daily routine to help release pain and enhance the health of your knees for the rest of your life. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or towel and a pillow to class.
Take this introductory course to find out about the benefits of Tai Chi. Participants will be introduced to Yang Tai Chi which is based on a Chinese philosophy regarding how the mind and body work together and is comprised of graceful, soft, flowing movements. Some of the benefits of Tai Chi include greater balance and focus, better awareness of mind-body connection, increased flexibility and stress release, and better harmony with nature. Please wear comfortable clothes.
This yoga class is for individuals at all levels, focusing on Hatha yoga postures meant to release, stretch, and build body-mind-spirit awareness. Class will focus on safe alignment, building core and total body strength, increasing flexibility, and improving balance as well as concentration and breath control. Slow flow yoga is smooth, yet challenging and is suitable for most abilities, including those who are new to the practice of yoga. Participants should be able to get up from and down on the floor several times throughout this class. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a yoga mat to class.
This style of yoga adapts to you and to your individual needs. It is very gentle as it stretches and strengthens your entire body, allowing both mind and body to reach deep relaxation. The poses learned build strength, flexibility, and balance and the breathing techniques will increase lung capacity. No previous yoga experience is required, and anyone (regardless of physical condition) can take and benefit from this class. Wear comfortable clothes, and bring a blanket and/or a mat to class. Conclude your week by releasing pent up stress while experiencing gentle and restorative yoga. Learn deep relaxation through especially mild yoga poses and breathing practices. Participants will learn easy, gentle techniques that will enable them to calm mind and body. These classes are intended for those who want to let go of stress, and require no previous experience with yoga. Wear comfortable clothes, and bring a blanket and/or a mat to class. No class on Apr. 5.
Let go of weekday stress and get ready for your weekend! Balance your life and your body to feel great. Learn poses and breathing techniques that energize you while helping you to relax as well. A great first step on the road to fitness, this class will stretch and strengthen our bodies and calm our minds. Building upon the skills learned in the Beginning Tai Chi course, this class continues the Yang Tai Chi style which incorporates both slow movements and secondary forms with a faster pace. Additionally, it allows participants to gain a more in-depth understanding of how the body and mind work together to create balance and harmony. The benefits include: a better outlook on life, better communication, better physical balance, and increased enlightenment and harmony.

DMV Points Insurance Reduction/5-Hour Prelicensing Course
The Point/Insurance Reduction Program, offered through the National Traffic Safety Institute and approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles, offers participants a way to reduce driver record violation points and/or insurance premiums. Saturday and daytime classes have a 1/2 hour lunch on your own. Please bring your driver’s license to class. Note: Students must arrive at this class promptly by 9 a.m. or 6 p.m. If you are late, you will not be admitted. We strictly adhere to this policy. This applies to every JCC location.
This is the five-hour NYS Department of Motor Vehicles’ pre-licensing course for students who are in the process of applying for their NYS motor vehicle license. You must bring your photo permit to class. Special Note: Please arrive by 4 pm. for check-in and paperwork process.
