Learning Assistance Services

Peer Tutoring:   Peer tutors offer assistance with writing, math, study skills, and understanding a variety of disciplines, including physical and social sciences; business and accounting; and liberal arts courses. Check for tutor availability for a specific course. Most tutoring is done one-on-one; however, group and cybertutoring can be arranged.

Group Tutoring:   Some people learn more efficiently through study groups. The group study room with ample white board space and conference table is an ideal meeting place. Groups generally work through homework problems, complete and clarify notes, predict test questions, and share ways of remembering complex material.

Computers:   Computers are available for Internet research, course-related software, assistive technologies, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

Supplementary Materials:   The learning center houses some current texts, supplementary texts, instructor files including practice exams, math and learning strategies videotapes, and reference materials. Handouts on scores of topics — including MLA and APA documentation, punctuation tips, outlining, summarizing, avoiding procrastination, and managing text anxiety are also available.

Test Analyses:   Deb Simpson, Coordinator of the Learning Assistance Center, will review a recent exam with a student, and together, they will develop learning strategies focused on a particular course and instructor.

Learning Environment:   The LACC has been designed so that each student can find a welcoming environment for study, including a quiet room with study carrels, an open room for tutoring, small tables for group learning, and a break room for snacking and studying. Computers are housed throughout the center.
