88 Books

88 BooksThe Library of Congress recently released a list of the 88 Books that Shaped America.  I was listening to a discussion of the list on “Talk of the Nation” radio show on WBFO (http://www.npr.org/2012/08/14/158771705/-books-that-shaped-america)

The discussion was on how certain books were included and why others weren’t. The Committee members took one full year to settle on the 88 books ultimately chosen for their impact on the United States.  I am still puzzled by some of the choices.  The Wizard of Oz? The Snowy Day?! Take a look at the list yourself and see what you think  (http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/books-that-shaped-america/).

Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake

If you are middle age, as you read Anna Quindlen’s latest book, you will find yourself repeatedly saying “I’ve said that” or “That happened to me” or “I’ve thought the same thing.”  Quindlen looks forward and backward at topics that are relevant to those of us either in middle age or approaching older age.  This book reads like sitting down with a best friend to talk about everything from childhood memories, to life’s up and downs, to what the future holds.  Her way with words delights, humors, and encourages you to assess your own life, values, and beliefs.
