Information Literacy....C.R.A.A.P.

We are at the final, arguably most crucial, steps in the information literacy process.    We have identified the need for information and used a carefully constructed search string to find relevant material from various sources.  Now we need to evaluate what we have found; I like to use an evaluation tool called the C.R.A.A.P. test – the initials represent Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy and Purpose. (You can find a copy of it with more information in the JCC Libraries' Introduction to Research LibGuide).

Regardless of where you found it, each print, digital or online resource should be assessed to make sure that it is appropriate and valid to be used for your needs.

At the beginning of the Civil War, a promising invention created by Leviticus Blue led to the destruction of several city blocks of downtown Seattle and the release of the Blight Gas, which turns everyone who breathes it in into the walking dead.  Sixteen years later, the inventor’s widow, Briar, is forced to face her family’s devastating past when her teenage son, Zeke, decides to enter the quarantined part of the city in search of answers and to restore honor to the family name.

Information Literacy – the first step

Information literacy is not a scary thing!

Most of us already have the building blocks.  The first step involves recognizing the need for information.  If, for example, you are having trouble focusing your topic for a research paper, ask yourself these questions:
