Biotechnology is really just using what we know about biology to modify biological systems. It is a productive strategy to develop medical treatments, new drug therapies, environmental remediation, or research strategies. Not surprising, biotechnology is a rapidly growing field that is providing stable and lucrative jobs in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Those interested in careers like medicine, veterinary science, research in environmental or biomedical fields, pharmacy, etc. are well prepared by training in biotechnology.

This degree prepares students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities to major in biology, molecular genetics, biochemistry, biotechnology and related fields. It provides a strong background in liberal arts and the comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and robust training required for bachelor’s degree programs in the modern biological sciences. Students interested in fields such as medical, veterinary, agricultural, environmental, and pharmaceutical sciences should consider a biotechnology degree to prepare them for their professional studies. Genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, microbiology are incorporated into the biotechnology degree, and students learn laboratory techniques such as tissue culture, DNA and RNA isolation and evaluation, and instrumental analysis. They can also participate in biomedical and environmental undergraduate research in state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

Apply basic structure function relationships as they contribute to the effective design of biotechnology interventions.
Apply basic concepts related to eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell and molecular biology that underpin gene expression and the manipulation of gene expression.

3. Competently function in a state of the art biotechnology laboratory in the context of scientific method using appropriate safety procedures, necessary laboratory instrumentation and computer software, online databases and resources, professional laboratory record keeping and the critical reasoning needed for effective troubleshooting.

Demonstrate appropriate professional conduct including scientific integrity, effectively using oral and written scientific communication, meeting deadlines, and working effectively on projects by themselves or as a team to reach a common goal.
Demonstrate an understanding of biotechnology and its cultural impacts, including the ethical downsides of biotechnology interventions and related ethical dilemmas.
