SUNY General Education Requirements

The SUNY General Education Requirement (SUNY GER) is the 30‐credit requirement for all SUNY baccalaureate, A.A., and A.S. degree recipients, which supports academic excellence as well as student choice, mobility, and degree attainment by expecting students to demonstrate achievement of SUNY‐wide learning outcomes.

Students matriculating in fall 2015 or after must complete 30 credits of SUNY General Education courses that are distributed among at least seven of the 10 SUNY content categories. Mathematics and Basic Communication must be among the seven categories. Exceptions to this policy will be noted on the appropriate academic program description page.

SUNY requirements are built into JCC’s Essentials. Your advisor will suggest specific SUNY-approved courses based on your program and career interests. To see a full listing of SUNY-approved courses in each content category click on the category names below.

ASL 1510 satisfies the SUNY Gen Ed foreign language requirement only for programs leading to:

  1. certification in elementary education and secondary education or  
  2. careers where there is likely to be contact with the hearing impaired.
