We offer College Connections students a variety of enrichment opportunities to build on their classes.
Weeks Gallery Art Talk
College Connections art students are invited to Jamestown Community College’s Weeks Gallery Art Talk events to explore current works and exhibitions in-depth, often with opportunities to interact with artists and learn about various techniques.
This contest is for CC students completing ENG 1530: English Composition II. The contest fulfills course requirements and provides students with an opportunity to showcase their work. The essay composed for the contest can be one of the three critical short essays required of the course, and oral delivery of the paper can be used as the course’s speech component. A selection committee chooses the finalists, who are invited to present their papers at a formal JCC event in which the winner and runner up receive cash prizes.
This contest is for College Connections students completing CMM 1610: Introduction to Communication. Students compete in contests in their high schools throughout the fall and early spring. First and second place winners at each school receive a JCC prize pack and go on to compete in the finals at JCC. Contestants complete their speech and a one-minute extemporaneous speech. This is a formal event, and the winner and runner up receive cash prizes.
Student Art Show
Through this event College Connections art students have the opportunity to exhibit their work at JCC. Each art teacher chooses two students from each course, and each of those students will exhibit 2-3 pieces at the Weeks Gallery. The exhibit runs for two weeks with an opening reception that includes live music, refreshments, and invitations to all of the exhibiting artists and their families. JCC Weeks Gallery staff choose two honorable mention winners and one Best in Show. The Best in Show winner receives a cash prize.
Students of the Year Award Celebration
Each year the College Connections program recognizes one junior and/or one senior from each of our partner high schools as our Students of the Year. We hold two celebrations, one at the Jamestown Campus and one at the Cattaraugus Campus. Families are invited to attend the celebration, which includes recognition of the students, live music, and refreshments.
Cultural Symposium Event: Celebrating Identity and Cultural Diversity
This event for College Connections foreign language students encourages students to think globally and challenges them to consider complex cultural issues. At this event students will meet with JCC international students and hear from refugees who seek protection in the United States. Studying a foreign language is just the beginning in understanding other cultures and world languages, and this event brings greater cultural awareness to students.
JCC’s Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Program
The legacy inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.'s campaign for civil rights and peace is commemorated each year at JCC. College Connections history students are invited to this annual event to explore facets of history and culture. Topics change each year and include programming that inspires students and faculty through film, literature, and conversation to explore history, culture, and politics.
