A combined 47 points from the duo of Tola Lawal and Tyshawn Edwards helped Erie Community College roll past Jamestown Community College, 102-79 in the Jayhawks’ NJCAA Region 3 Division II season-opener on Thursday.

The loss opens the New Year for the Jayhawks (4-11, 0-1), which had been off since Dec. 21. The Kats, the sixth ranked NJCAA Division II team in the national men’s basketball rankings, advance to 12-1 on the season with the victory.

JCC exchanged the lead with its visitors seven times during an entertaining first half of play and enjoyed an 29-28 lead with five minutes left before Erie CC finished the half on an 18-6 run to take control of the game at the break. Erie CC took a commanding 20-point lead early in the second half, but a resilient Jayhawks squad answered back with an 11-2 run to cut the Kats’ lead to 64-54. The Jayhawks and Kats exchanged baskets before ECC finally took charge of the game with a 7-0 run to take the game in hand.
Lawal led ECC with 26 points while Edwards chipped in 21. JCC freshman Ashton Brown (Randolph/Randolph) put in another dazzling performance on the stat sheet, leading all scorers with 31 points for the Jayhawks, knocking down 14 field goals as well as finishing nine-of-10 at the free throw line. Sophomore Marcus McAffee (Jamestown/Jamestown) rounded out a strong backcourt performance from JCC with 20 points. Sophomore Thomas Lee (Performing Arts, NY) and freshmen Ryan Rice (Clymer/Clymer) and Marcus Williams (Niagara Wheatfield/Niagara Falls) all finished with six points apiece for JCC.
The Jayhawks return to their home floor as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team on Saturday. The men are scheduled for a 3 p.m. start with Mercyhurst North East.
